If your goal is basic health you really don't have to do all that much. Basic health does not have to take up all of your week. The 80/20 rule of life will serve you well here. Just 20% of the work will return 80% of the benefits.

Basic health can be achieved with this simple recipe. Do any more and you are really getting into sporting performance. This simple recipe for health won't make most people model material. But it WILL keep a person at a healthy body fat if done consistently.

  • LOG - your food.
  • RESISTANCE - training once per week, 1 hour, body weight ok.
  • PLAY - outside once per week.

Log your food

For basic health there is no need to be too anal or accurate about this. Just log what and how much you eat at every meal. This can be as simple as a small notebook, an online spreadsheet or a smart phone app. For obvious reasons a person can always consume more energy than they burn. You can't out-run food you have already eaten. The simple act of being held accountable for what you eat will allow you to increase, decrease or adjust what you are eating. Eat food that you enjoy in moderation and forget about guilt or cravings.

Resistance Training

One hour of resistance training. Once per week. To failure. Body weight exercises like squats, push-ups, sit-ups, chair dips and chin-ups are all perfect. If you want to get stronger or look even better add a little weight or make the exercises harder.

Play

Get outside once per week and play. Walk, run, play. Take a frisby, ball or just stroll with a loved one. You will get Vitamin D even if it's overcast. You will get hormone improvements and de-stress. Very simple very effective, 80/20 baby.

Consistency here really is the key. Anyone that consistently follows this simple recipe for health will be strong and sexy. You WILL be happier and healthier after a year of doing this compared to doing nothing and it can be done at virtually zero cost.
